3 Underground Singers About To Blow

They may not have their music videos playing on MTV or other international music video stations, but they certainly have their music banging in local neighbourhoods like agege, iju, alagbado, akute, berger etc. Their metronome filled instrumental provides a sound suitable for the sreeching loudspeakers usually at motor parks, as commercial bus drivers, conductors and okada men nod their heads to the music while sipping ogogoro. Recently, these guys are blowing up big time that the mainstream is begining to buy into their idea and brand of music. You must have heard their songs without actually knowing who sang them. These guys have managed to cover the SW region of Nigeria and beyond where their kind of music is mostly appreciated because of their use of yoruba language. Anyway, below are a list of underground singers about to blow.

1. Small Doctor

I remember having a job contract that had me plying agege, alagbado and akute, this song was what welcomed me into every motor park. Formerly known to roll with Pasuma as an opener, his street songs have seen him hosting shows on his own. Songs like “mosquito”, “street doctor” and “anobi” are club bangers today. Most of them don't really have a particular chorus, they mostly sound like freestyle. With no particular video out yet, his name has become a household name as he is known by street urchins, thugs, local gin sellers and now the hiphop mainstream for his powerful 18 tracker album titled “street ambassador”.

2. Qdot

His type of music can be compared to what you hear at a local palmwine joint or a kegite meeting. His use of bells in his instrumentals bring out that feel that white garment churches can relate to. A native of the ancient city Ibadan, he dedicates a song to it titled “Ibadan” featuring olamide. Majority of his fans still wonder why his ghetto banging song “Orijin” isn't getting endorsed by guinness, the makers of the drink Orijin, as the song blends perfectly well with the local theme behind the drink. His current hit “Ibi ire”, features 9ice and terry G and produced by D-tunes.

3. Famous

Owo ni senior, igboro ni junior.... I know you must have heard that phrase coming out of some speakers somewhere. That belongs to a song called “igboro” performed by Famous. This song is what every hustler can relate to as it tells you what you need to know before you become a baller enjoying life and painting the town red. The first time I heard this song, I didn't like it cos I felt it was local. The day I fell in love with it was the day the song hunted me around. Every room I entered, be it a barber shop or a mechanic's store, this song was what filled the air. I paid attention to the content and that was how I was hooked. I later learnt that the ajebos also love it as people I didn't expect rocked hard to it at a well organised party. If this dude can come up with another song of this nature, then the sky will be his limit.
