The Yorubas Who Worked For Buhari's Victory

Right from 2013, poltical analysts positioned the southwest as the region that will determine the winner of the just concluded 2015 presidential election. This analysis made political parties see the region as the battle ground, a thing that made the ruling party, PDP, wake up from its slumber of marginalizing the region, though at a late period.

Below are the key yoruba politicians who helped ensure that the APC candidate, muhammadu buhari, won the region even though PDP gave them a run for it.

1. Lai mohammed

He is the national publicity secretary of the all progressives congress who came up with constructive criticism that ensured people dwelled on national issues that would have been swept under the carpet. He was among those that made APC's campaign issue based. He had the ability to make issues out of nothing, and since most of his assertions end up being correct, people cared less about questioning whatever seemed like propaganda coming from him. He was always seen in one media outlet or another and moving from state to state selling his party and showing the nigerian democratic setting what an opposition's voice ought to sound like. No wonder he offered to school PDP's olisa metuh on opposition politics.

2. Kayode fayemi

He is the ex-governor of ekiti state who, after losing the chance for a second term, called to congratulate his opponent, an act that later became a trend in the just concluded elections. He coordinated APC's transparent presidential primaries that saw the emergence of the candidature of general buhari. His influence gave buhari the needed 25% in a PDP controlled ekiti state. His coordination of the primaries that ended with no rancour added a boost to the campaigns of his party as many had thought the primaries would lead to an implosion of the party.

3. Babatunde fashola

He came to limelite in 2007 when he won the gubernatorial election in lagos under the defunct ACN. His vision for a better lagos and the ability to make them come to fruition made other SW states give his party a chance to govern them cos they all wanted a piece of the ideology that transformed lagos into a mega city. His achievements in lagos helped secure the state which had the 2nd highest number of PVC's collected.

4. Abike dabiri

She's currently an honourable at the National assembly. She was always present at the presidential rallies of the APC and stood as a representative of women, making it clear that a buhari administration will be friendly to women contrary to what his detractors say. To cement that, she's currently tipped for a ministerial role.

5. Bola tinubu

When most of the SW states became PDP controlled, he ensured lagos state remained an opposition force. He built the defunct ACN and made it a bride lusted after by other political parties and states. He was able to spread the party's tentacles to other SW states which positioned it as the party to beat inorder to win the SW, this made the CPC and a faction of APGA merge with it to form the formidable APC that wrestled powers from the PDP which ruled for 16yrs.

6. Olusegun obasanjo

The former president was very instrumental in the victory of general buhari, as his incessant verbal attacks on president Goodluck jonathan helped reduce the incumbent's popularity both locally and internationally. Not only verbally, he wrote an 18 page letter called 'before it is too late' and also published a book called 'my watch' in which he came down heavily on president Goodluck jonathan. He accepted the offer to help navigate APC's agenda even as a card carrying member of PDP. He later tore his card in the presence of the media, an act that other aggrieved PDP members followed.
